They first thing I should inform you is that both White House Down & Olympus Has Fallen are very solid action flicks.
Why am I saying this? Well it’s because the quality of both films is not really obvious in the amount of money they are making/made at the Box Office.
According to the news, this is because their plots touch on a sensitive subject that some quarters in America are just not happy about.
Terrorism on American Soil with such finesse showing American vulnerability is not one thing Americans consider a good plot I guess. They’ve been bitten too much by real life cases to consider it entertainment anymore. And I don’t blame them one bit.
Anyways back to the topic….. Is this movie a rip off of Olympus Has Fallen?
In my opinion, I’ll say a big No; which was a big surprise to me because of the level of similarity in themes.
I can imagine how the film makers felt when they heard Olympus Has Fallen was being produced and would be hitting the cinemas before them but I give them kudos; not only were they able to give us a very different plot, the whole feel of the movie was different & I have a feeling nobody felt like they were watching Olympus Has Fallen all over again.
In terms of how believable it was, I think White House Down had a better angle to portray how some forces could capture the White House and it didn’t hurt the movie at all that Channing Tatum was the lead actor or that Jamie Foxx was playing a Black President (something Olympus Has Fallen failed at).
The only sad part is that I can’t give it any major props for innovation, quality acting or being anything far from a typical action film.
Would I say it was a better film in all? I’m kinda conflicted on this because I like them both for various reasons, but I would still say Olympus Has Fallen was better. Not only was able to take my mind off all the mediocre releases the first half of 2013 had to offer, it is still one of the best films I’ve seen so far this year.
White House Down was a very enjoyable film and could probably have made more money at the Box Office if not for its plot. It’s a shame the filmmakers could be looking at a major flop on their hands trying to recuperate their $150 million budget.
If you’ve seen the movie what do you think?
Is White House Down a rip off of Olympus Has Fallen or did they end up making a better film? (I know one person who thinks it was better….).
If you haven’t seen it yet, take a trip down to the cinema closest to you, it would be worth your time.
