Highlights From The 2014 Emmys

In what can be unanimously  tagged as Television’s biggest night – The Emmy Awards which is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history of television while educating and inspiring those who will shape its future was held on Monday night at the Nokia Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles, California and was hosted by  Comedian and Late Night Anchorman Seth Meyers.

Now in its 66th year, the Emmy statuettes were first given out in 1949 representing arts (a winged woman) and sciences (an atom) while covering a wide range of categories, from Outstanding Drama to Outstanding Reality Competition with television favorites Breaking Bad, Modern Family and Sherlock stealing the show.

Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston walked away with the coveted Top Acting honor beating Daniels, McConaughey (True Detective), Woody Harrelson (True Detective), Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) and Jon Hamm (Mad Men), before handing out the award, presenter Julia Roberts called it “a horrible category” to compete in. “Even I thought about voting for Matthew,” Cranston joked about presumed front runner McConaughey before calling tortured character Walter White “the role of a lifetime.”

62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Press Room

While his Tv show clean up in the drama categories – including Outstanding Series and while collecting the award for best drama series, Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan said: “Holy cow! This is indeed a wonderful time to be working in television. Thank you for this wonderful farewell to our show.”

Breaking bad bested Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Mad Men and True Detective in the Outstanding Drama Series while in comedy, Modern Family won Outstanding Series, tying it with Emmy darling Frasier as the only shows with five top prizes. It beat out such high-profile series as The Big Bang Theory, Louie, Orange Is the New Black and Veep.

In his opening monologue, Host Seth Meyers stated reasons why the Awards was been held on a Monday which was unprecedented in almost thirty years, stating the need to avoid competition with the MTV Video Music Awards and football season. “That’s right, MTV still has an awards show for music videos, even though they no longer show videos. That’s like network TV holding an awards show and giving all the trophies to cable and Netflix,”

In other categories, The Good Wife star Julianna Margulies won the Emmy for best lead actress in a drama series for her part as lawyer Alicia Florrick.

“I feel like this is the golden age of television, but it’s also the time for women in television,” she said. “I feel very grateful to be here.”

There were also best actress and best supporting actress in a mini-series awards for Oscar winners Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates for their roles in American Horror Story: Coven.

Finally, we here at Moviepencil want to give special recognition to Uzo Aduba on her win as Outstanding Guest Actress, the Nigerian was recognized for her riveting role in Netflix drama series “Orange Is The New Black” in which she embodies the character “Crazy Eyes”.
