Let’s talk about the 2018 AMVCA Nominations…

I refrained from writing about the 2018 Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Award (AMVCA) nominations for this long because it’s usually a bitter sweet moment for a lot of people. On the one hand, you have those who are excited about their nominations (of which they have a right to be), then you have some deserving people who don’t get nominated (which I’m sure hurts).

The dilemma then becomes writing about what I now see as a mediocre awards platform without making those who got nominated feel like you’re shitting on their nomination.  I guess I’ll just have to try, but know this, if you’re a nominee, nothing I write will take away from your nomination, all I say is directed at those we thought we could trust with adequately awarding the film/TV content being produced within Africa. Alas, they have other ideas.

For this discussion, I’m going to list the nominations and place some footnotes as I go through. For the first time, I’m not even excited to highlight who I would like to win, but remember, these are my opinions, not fact, not truth, my opinions.

BEST SHORT FILM OR ONLINE VIDEO

The Housewife – Jay Franklin Jituboh

Tolu – Nadine Ibrahim

Penance – Michael ‘Ama Psalmist’ Akinrogunde

Lodgers – Keni Ogunlola

Tanwa.. The Child We Wanted – Adenike Adebayo

It’s amazing to see that Lodgers is still scamming its way into nominations in the short film category. But can I blame them, I would do the same. You see Lodgers was a pilot episode of a proposed TV series, but I don’t think that panned out since 2016 when it was produced; anyways after winning the award for best short film at AFRIFF 2016, the pilot episode has become a ‘TV Short Film’ talk about being resourceful with your lemons!

Petu Na Garu – Sylone Malalo

I keep wondering how nominating TV shows and movies in the same category makes sense, I’m yet to come up with an answer, so if you have one that can help, please drop it in the comment section.

BEST MOVIE SOUTHERN AFRICA

Descent – Awal Abdulfatai

The Road To Sunrise – Shemu Joyah

Salute! – Philippe Talavera

Jomako Black Democracy – Abraham Kabwe

Nyasaland – Joyce Mhango Chavula

I haven’t seen any of the films in the language categories or from other regions in Africa, however, based on the AMVCA’s reputation, I can almost beat my chest and say that they didn’t nominate the best films… Almost!

BEST MOVIE EAST AFRICA

18 Hours – Phoebe Ruguru

Devil’s Chest – Hassan Mageye

The Forbidden – Kizito Samuel Saviour

Rain – Mathew & Eleanor Nabwiso

Bella – Matt Bish

BEST LIGHTING DESIGNER MOVIE OR TV SERIES

Tatu – Akpe Ododoru, Tunde Akinniyi

Kada River – Godwin Gatta

Hidden – Agbo Kelly

Lotanna – Toka Mcbaror

Children of Mud – Sunday Olalekan

I’m still not totally satisfied with the AMVCA’s criteria for nomination which says that content is eligible merely when it has been ‘broadcast or publicly screened’. For a Viewer’s Choice Awards, I believe content should have had a broader avenue to be screened for viewers. Meaning, if you’ve just screened the content at a few festivals, or done a private premiere and have not either been screened at the cinemas (or in these creative days, traveling community screenings), or at least be available on platforms for the general audience to either pay to watch or watch for free, then you have no business being nominated for a VIEWER’S CHOICE AWARD.

BEST OVERALL MOVIE

Potato Potahto – Shirley Frimpong-Manso

Alter Ego – Moses Inwang/Esther Eyibio

18 Hours – Phoebe Ruguru

Devil’s Chest – Hassan Mageye

Descent – Awal Abdulfatai

The Road to Sunrise – Shemu Joyah

This one is just a joke.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA (MOVIE/TV SERIES)

Tatu – Toyin Abraham

Banana Island Ghost – Dorcas Fapson

Tatu – Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi

Blackrose – Ebele Okaro

Isoken – Lydia Forson

Alter Ego – Emem Inwang

I thought they said it was Best Supporting Actress in a Drama, Movie or TV series? Are they saying they couldn’t find any TV actresses to nominate? This goes for most, if not all combined TV/Movie Categories. You see why it makes no sense to combine the categories?

Meanwhile… BIG was a drama? Really?? O ma ga o.

Hollup Hollup!!! Was Dakore not nominated below for Isoken in the Best Actress in a Comedy category?? AMVCA, you guys need to make up your mind, is Isoken a Drama or a Comedy??????

Tatu – Thelma Ozy Smith, Hakeem Effect Onilogbo

Ojukokoro (Greed) – Sandra Oyiana

What Lies Within – Cynthia Ububa

Disguise – Hakeem Effect

Lotanna – Nnena Emekalam

Let me talk briefly about two films in this category. So the AMVCA’s judging panel watched ‘What Lies Within’ and ‘Ojukokoro (Greed)’ and the best they could offer was the category above and an additional sound nomination for the latter? So unfortunate.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA (MOVIE/TV SERIES)

Banana Island Ghost – Saidi Balogun

Banana Island Ghost – Tomiwa Edun

New Money – Falz

Idahosa Trails – Kunle Idowu

Okafor’s Law – Gabriel Afolayan

Betrayal – Wale Ojo

This category is a problem. A serious one. First they include nominations from BIG in a category for Drama, then didn’t pick Akah Nnani? What do I know you say? Then they nominated Kunle Idowu for Idahosa Trails but not Hakkunde in the Best Actor Category? P.S. There were better films to use for Gabriel Afolayan’s nomination.

This is one of the saddest categories in this year’s nominations list, and I’m trying very hard not to curse while I type this.

We all know that voting for the AMVCAs can be such a popularity contest. It’s not a problem, that’s the joker in a Viewer’s Choice Awards system. All we are asking is that the Jury do a better job in dishing out the nominations. This year’s list is even worse than when they nominated AY’s A Trip to Jamaica for Best Writing. Again, what do I know?

All of the above being said, congratulations to all the nominees and eventual winners.

P.S. Upon further review, I realize there is no nomination for Best Supporting Actor / Actress in a Comedy… this explains why it seemed they merged the nominations into one Category. But their website still lists it as Drama, so maybe they need to fix that. Further, merging it still makes little sense!

Let’s talk about the 2018 AMVCA Nominations…
